Indianapolis a.k.a. Indy a.k.a. Naptown a.k.a. The big little city! You can click on the pictures in this section to see the whole view! That image was taken from the 8th of the building I work at facing south.
Been here since July 2008, it was most def a culture change from life in New York State. Hardest things to get used to here are you can't get a haddock fish fry, there are NO 24 hour laundrymats and a good slice of pizza is non-existent! But you can get some of the best BBQ I've ever had here! OMG to die for!
This is the first city that I've permenately lived in that has had serverl major sports teams. Even though I'm not a big sports fanatic I can still route for the home teams! We have the Colts, Pacers, womens pro basketball (these woman are good!) Indiana Fever, our minor league baseball team Indianapolis Indians and this one blew me away, our womens football team the Indiana Speed.
"The Crossroads of America is a nickname given to the state of Indiana as it, and, more specifically, the city of Indianapolis is the hub for several major Interstate highways that criss-cross the state, connecting Hoosiers to the rest of the United States." - Wikipedia You want interstates, we got'm! There's the Indianapolis beltway which is Interstate 465. Obviously since it's a beltway it emcompasses Indianapolis. If you were to get on it and travel the whole belt it would take you just slightly more than an hour. Have to watch out for the crazy drivers, but the Indiana state police have a put Mustang GT's into play. These guys can sneak up on you now! And no, they are not all the same color and some have racing stripes and some don't! Good Luck! Other Interstates that feed into and out of the Interstate 465 belt are Interstate 65, Interstate 69, Interstate 70, Interstate 74 and Interstate 865 which is an east-west connector for Interstate 65. There is some serious highway here!
I've placed a few photo's on the left and right here of different things and parts of the city that I've explored so far. There's still so much to see yet!
Once of my favorite settings of Indy is Monument Circle. The wikipedia link has a really nice down looking photo of the circle. It's also know as the Soldiers and Sailor Monument, it was created to memorialize those who fought in the American Revolution, territorial conflicts that partially led up to the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the US Civil War, and the Spanish American War. If you climb the stairs there a small entrance way and for a $1 you can ride a very small elevator to the top of the 284ft monument and look out over the cirle. Word to the wise, don't do this on an extremely HOT day! Day I went up there it was 96F on the surface and it was well in excess of 110F at the top and there's no ventilation up there!! The bottom of the monument host a small civil war museum lots of neat stuff!
A place that I found facinating was the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Most known for the Indy 500. I never realized the in depth history of this location! Not to mention its huge! There's a quicky bus tour around the track which is very informative but the one I really want to take is the long tour were they take you places the public doesn't get to go. One of these day I'll get to see it!
The Indianapolis Zoo, I like it! It didn't smell (much), there's always going to be some smell with animals around. It was clean and very interesting! They have a really neat dolphin show which was surprising to see since not many zoo's keep marine life. It wasn't Sea World but it was entertaining. Next coolest thing to the dolphins was petting the sharks! They feel wierd! Next visit I want to see the komodo dragons and visit the butterfly santuary.
Another cool facet of the city is the Canal Walk. The canal has alot of history to it since it initially was meant to be a functional canal rather then a recreation spot. The Indiana State Museum is right on it's banks (haven't been there yet, but soon!) and along the way are nicely landscaped gardens, sculptures and other works of art. You can ride your bike or rent a bike to ride along the canal, there are also paddle boats that you can rent to float along the canal.
I may not be a huge sports fan but I'd like to go visit the The NCAA hall of Champions at least once. It might be a really fast viisit but just to say I'd been there!
There is so much that this city holds to do! I can't possilbe tell it all, it's just some of the things I've seen and did and want to do! I put up more pictures of Indy on the Photos Page(s).
And the eats are that bad either! Hmmmmmmm .. Rib America haven't been yet, I've smelt it .. but haven't been! =(
